The indigenous people who first lived at Malibu were the Chumash, and they were also the first surf-stoked people to gawk at the perfect waves wrapping around the point. The word Malibu comes from the Chumash, Himaliwu, which basically means “Whoa, a whole lotta waves here.” Since roughly the 1950s, Malibu has meant, in English, “Whoa, a whole lotta surfers here.”
